Anatomy

Sometimes it is difficult for me to discern the difference between what is done for the sake of information, or exploration in the field of anatomy, and what has enough artistic merit to stand outside of the shadow of being a mere study of the body. This is a place where I have intentionally made work with the sole focus of studying the thing I am observing, not with aesthetic goals in mind, but to merely seek to understand. Some of these images may be rather forward, their purpose is not to shock or provoke, but to help reveal and understand.

It is through observation that we learn about things in the world. The separation of ourselves as human animals, with all the attendant habits of biological life, and ourselves as civilized beings has turned the attention paid to the human body into a thing focused mostly on sex and sexuality. This is not universally true, but people’s reaction to images of the nude are often revealing, often with a tinge of embarrassment. I believe that the study of the human body in a quiet and still room is one of the most civilized pastimes in which I have ever participated.
